The eighth season of The Office was the first without original series star Steve Carell as Michael Scott; he was replaced with new cast member James Spader as Sabre CEO Robert California, while Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) was promoted to regional manager of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch.
In the ninth and final season of the show, Spader is gone, and the focus returns to the core cast (with the addition of Catherine Tate as Nellie Bertram).
Then by the end, I was like, “It seems they’re hinting that this character’s going to stay in the show.” So I don’t really know how it happened, besides extraordinary good luck and timing.
Actually, we just read the season finale, and I was just waiting for them to be like, “And unfortunately, Erin has to go,” but there wasn’t any hint of that.
